About

Why make it when you can buy it?

There are many reasons, for us it is the creation…the process. I am a private caterer and artist, my husband builds things and it is in our nature to want to create things. Making wine is much like making the perfect Bearnaise, it is all in the execution and the quality of the ingredients. You will get some flops, but you’ll also get some beauties too. The important thing to do is to keep trying!

What you will not find here is talk of “kit” wines and things of that nature. We feel that kit wines are somewhat, well, silly. It’s like going out to the farmers market and buying a fully mature heirloom tomato plant and then coming home and celebrating growing the perfect tomato. See the irony? The joy is in the process…I promise you that making wine is a joyous process indeed and one that will change you for the better. You become a little more passionate, very giving and land yourself on everyone’s guest list for parties.

Isn’t it a little, well, redneck? There is a stigma that goes with homemade wines…they are strong, quaffable, and somewhat declasse. Maybe that is the case with some of the wines made via the grocery store, but the REAL homemade wine can be just as wonderful as your winery favorites. In fact, many wineries sell their grapes and juices to home wine makers and we use much of the same equipment, ingredients and processes as wineries, just on a smaller scale. Many of my fellow home wine makers hold graduate degrees, have wonderful careers and lead lovely cultured lives…we may have a few “redneck” moments here and there, but in general, we are a pretty good bunch. Wine making is for everyone, this wine making website is for those who want to take it to the next level and enjoy their wines with wonderful food and celebrate the good life.

Homemadewine.net has been on the internet for nearly a decade and recipes have been gathered shared and passed along for so long now that at times the original author may not be credited properly. We do apologize for any errors or omissions. Many of the recipes are our own so please, don’t grab them and credit them as your own. Please give credit where credit is due.

Many of these recipes have been sent by visitors and while we do check over each recipe for accuracy, we cannot promise how each will turn out for you. With the hundreds of recipes here we would be knee deep in wine for the rest of our days if we made each and every recipe!

A printed compilation of the recipes, tutorials and indexes contained here, along with several new recipes is available for order. The cost is $10.95 + $3.95 shipping. A PDF version is available for $10.95.
